The Memorial House of Martin Jonaš

Martin Jonaš is one of the most prominent personalities in the world of naive painting. He was born in 1924 in Kovačica, where he finished primary school and spent his entire working and life, mostly as a farmer and artist. He was a leading figure in Kovacica’s naive painting and one of the founders of the Gallery of Naive Art in Kovacica. He started painting at the age of twenty-one and exhibited for the first time in Kovačica. During his  active artistic work, he has exhibited in more than 450 solo and group exhibitions. He was the winner of high international artistic awards. In addition to Salvador Dali and Renato Gatus, he won a gold medal at the great international exhibition of drawings in Italy in 1978.

Martin Jonaš’s house is a unique documentary about the life of this artist – the walls of the room in which he painted are covered with photographs, medals and diplomas. Shelves rich in professional literature, folders with extensive correspondence, magazines and newspapers from around the world with reports on the artist – a respectable article and photographic archive. There is also a collection of paintings, historical documents, books and old periodicals connected with the history of the Slovak Vojvodina enclave.
